PLANTING:  Dig the planting hole approximately 18" wide and 18" deep.  Add peat moss or compost to the hole.  Set the base of the plant 2-4" below soil level so two sets of leaf nodes are covered.  Add 3-4" of mulch.  To avoid stem rot, keep the mulch 6-8" away from the stem.
PRUNING TYPE 2:  Types that produce two flushes of flowers; the first in spring on old ripened growth from the previous year; the second during late summer on current year's growth.  All dead and weak stems should be removed in late spring.  If selective pruning is necessary, do it immediately after the early flowering period is over, working from the the top of the plant down.  Also prune back the flowered shoots to encourage reblooming.
PRUNING TYPE 3: Clematis which flower on the current year's new growth in early summer.  Do annual pruning in late winter or early spring, cutting back all the old stems to the lowest pair of live buds.
